How Galesburg Marked 9/11 10 Years Ago
Solemn prayer and worship marked how Galesburg remembered 10 years ago the day that changed America.

About a week after the 9/11 attacks, the city held a community candlelight vigil at Central Congregational Church that WGIL helped host.

A large number of speakers talked about the country's resiliency in the face of danger, including State Representative Don Moffitt.

"Once again, great American heroes stepped forward for the defense of freedom, and our protection. Those heroes being all our military personnel, our firefighters, our police, and our emergency medical personnel," Moffitt said. "God bless every one of them."

Lynn Tyler, then executive director of the Western Illinois chapter of the American Red Cross, says Galesburg responded quickly as well.

Before very many hours had gone by, after the tragic events of September 11th, the outpouring of care and concern was amazing," Tyler said. "Hundreds of people called. Hundreds of people decided that they had to do something. And what they opted to do the first day was to give blood."

A public service commemorating the 10th anniversary of 9/11 is Sunday afternoon at 4 at First Presbyterian Church in Galesburg, with a number of other observances around the area as well.
