Galesburg Art Helped Honor 9/11
Many people in many different ways helped to commemorate the September 11th terrorist attacks then and in the years since. And a Galesburg High School art teacher was among them.

Chris Dokolasa is now the Art Department's chair. We found her at Sunday's "Art in the Park," and she told us that she created artwork at the request of some Galesburg firefighters, that was eventually delivered to New York City when some responders traveled there to help in the recovery efforts.

Dokolasa tells WGIL she was asked specifically to create a drawing that helped define the sadness and tragedy of that fateful day.

"I created a pen and ink drawing of a little boy with his dad's police officer hat on -- a little too big for him -- and he was sitting next to a fire dog," Dokolasa said. "They're both a little sad. And in the background is the ruins of the World Trade Center, with a fireman climbing over some of the rubble."

The drawing was reproduced locally and used as a fundraiser to help in the New York City recovery. Dokolasa says it was her contribution to the recovery, and she was very happy to do it.

Speaking of "Art in the Park", a large crowd attended this year's event hosted by the Galesburg Civic Art Center.

Over 50 different booths of arts and various crafts were available for viewers to look at, and even to buy in some cases.
