Collection Agencies Could Be Calling Over Outstanding Student Fees
The Abingdon School Board is still looking into the possibility of hiring a collection agency to collect outstanding student fees.

The board said the majority of the outstanding fees are from the high school and in the past told students they couldn't graduate until fees were paid, however the board was concerned it wouldn't solve the issue since that only effects seniors.

Superintendent David Black told the board he was able to find a collection agency that has worked with schools before called A-P-R and they have a very simple approach.

"This company basically sends letters and e-mails. They pointed out that most of the time they get about half of them collected just with the letters, because if a letter shows up saying they're a collections agency that's been contacted by the school it gets people to call in."

The School board did not make a final decision on hiring a collection agency.

There was concerns it was too impersonal and some members of the board thought there were better ways to collect late fees.
