Fall Harvest Beginning in Earnest
It's the beginning of the end for local farmers this season, and depending on where you go in the area, things might be good, or they might not.

Knox County Farm Bureau president David Erickson says you can expect yields that will vary across the area at least for corn -- he's heard anywhere from 50 bushels per acre, to 200 bushels.

Erickson tells the WGIL Morning News there's one of two reasons for that.

"Part of it is [crop] rotation, and part of it is catching a little bit of a rain at the right time," Erickson said. "The rains that we got in this area, like June 30th from the inch-and-a-half to two-and-a-half inches that many people got, was truly a crop saver. That was truly a rain that very much came at a needed time."

Erickson says most farmers will start harvesting corn now if they haven't done so already, while it probably will be October before soybeans are harvested.

He's not hearing about many harvest problems, and while it's not really been spotted in this area, farmers are on the lookout for molds like aflatoxin.
