City Council Supports Library Land Swap
The Galesburg City Council officially wants to give the Galesburg Public Library the land the former Super 8 on West Main Street sits on.

Aldermen voted six-to-two last night to support a future transfer of the property the city owns on West Main, in exchange for a small parcel given to the library near the former OT Johnson's site.

But some aldermen wondered if the support would obligate the city to help pay for the library's construction if not enough funds are raised.

Library Board Construction Committee Chair Mike Kroll says some help may be needed in the future.

"Inevitably at the end of the project there will be a need for some amount of matching money for those grants and at that time we would most likely have to come back to the city and ask for your assistance. We hope to minimize that by being as successful and diligent at seeking these grants as possible."

But Kroll says the library board can't seek grants unless it has the property it needs. Assuming the city does trade the former Super 8 site for part of the former OT site, Kroll says the library could then purchase surrounding properties also.

No word on when the next step might be taken.
