Alzheimer's Awareness Comes to Galesburg
When a family member's diagnosed with Alzheimer's it quickly becomes a family disease and takes a major toll on everyone involved.

The Alzheimer Association is hosting an Alzheimer's walk this weekend to raise money and bring awareness of the disease to the community,

Out reach specialist for the Alzheimer Association Missy Kowalski tells the WGIL Morning News why it's so important event's like the walk continue and people continue to donate money.

"It's the sixth leading cause of death and it's the only one in the top ten that has no way to prevent or even slow down the progression. We thought for a while some of the medicines were slowing it down but we found out that really not the case long term and there's no was to prevent it at this point other than just good general health care."

The walk will be held at Hawthorn Gymnasium with registration starting at 8 o'clock Saturday morning. Kolawski says the money raised will go to clinical trials and research as well as helping create family programs. More than two-hundred-thousand people are diagnosed with Alzheimer's in Illinois.
