Aldermen Approve New Deal With Garbage Provider
The Galesburg City Council is sticking with the company that's provided garbage service for years.

Aldermen this week approved a five-year contract with Waste Management that essentially will result in an increase of less than a dollar per month for garbage service.

Galesburg 5th Ward Alderman Peter Schwartzman wanted curbside hazardous waste pickup as part of the deal, but he understands why it's not there.

"An extra $5 a quarter or $20 dollars a month is significant, it's about an extra ten percent on the bill and that probably is prohibitive I'm estimating what my constituents would think of it and suspect most of them would probably reject it. That being said I think there is a great need for this."

Recycling will be upgraded with all residents getting carts, versus the test area previously. All homes will get the 96 gallon containers being used.

A majority of the council okayed pursuing an option related to access to free compost for residents who want it.
