City Council Honors Fishing Derby Supporter
A late longtime supporter of an annual Galesburg event is being recognized with a special thank-you from the city of Galesburg.

The Galesburg City Council this week voted to pass a resolution renaming the picnic shelter at Lincoln Park after Mick Tate. The manager of both former EconoFoods locations in town passed away four years ago, but is being recognized now for his contributions to the Galesburg Youth Fishing Derby.

Local outdoors enthusiast Al Hayden says the naming is perfect for Tate, and is the sort of thing that should be done more often.

"Quite often we don't really give recognition to volunteers in a real public manor and it's kind of nice if we have an opportunity since he's the one that really was the catalyst for getting that put up out there that we should name it after him. Gives some other people of the community the idea that volunteers don't go unrecognized."

Tate was a part of the former Optimist Club prior to its disbandment. Former members of the Optimist Club signed a petition that made the re-naming happen.
