Chief Justice Touts New Court Accessibility Program
A commission formed by the Illinois Supreme Court is apparently doing its job.

That's according to Chief Justice Thomas Kilbride. Kilbride was named Illinoisan of the Year by the past-presidents of the Illinois News Broadcasters Association over the weekend.

Kilbride says a recently-formed "Access to Justice" Commission is working toward its ultimate goal of making the legal system easier to handle for what's described as the poor and vulnerable.

"Not in just a conceptual way real in a real way trying to come up forms that self represented litigants and other folks can use that are written in plan and simple English. As I told the folks on the committee there's no reason to use utilize when you may use use. And that's something you may want to keep in mind too. Keep it simple as they say."

Kilbride says another program is working toward providing training to judges, court staff, on how to treat people who come into courthouses.

A third committee is dealing with court access for those who don't primarily speak English.

An electronic court file accessing system is also being worked on, though Kilbride says concerns persist over identify theft and other things.
