Veto Fails With No Discussion, but Alderman Heavily Discuss Liquor Ordinance
The Galesburg City Council couldn't override a mayoral veto of an ordinance regarding possession of small amounts of cannabis, but that turns out not to be the big story.

Aldermen failed to override the measure that would have allowed for alternative sanctions for possession of two-and-a-half grams or less of marijuana. The four-four vote largely reflected the original vote a few weeks ago.

That got no discussion whatsoever. But what got big discussion was the proposal to allow alcohol sales at Lake Storey Pavilion.

Seventh Ward Alderman Jeremy Karlin didn't like much of the proposal.

"This ordinance should be drafted in a manner the actually considers how parties are catered in this town, and also allows the caterers who do the catering here to actually do that."

Karlin was referring to the city's overall liquor license structure in part, and how he feels that it would be more difficult for some establishments than others to cater and provide alcohol for special events.

Other concerns ranged from claims that many are discouraged from using Lake Storey Pavilion because alcohol isn't there, to where alcohol sales would stop if they're started at the Pavilion.

Mayor Sal Garza says the city's liquor advisory commission did thorough work crafting the ordinance, which will face a final vote in two weeks.
