| Kohl's Delays Galesburg Store Again |
A major department store chain has changed its mind for the second time in six months about building in Galesburg. The City of Galesburg says Kohl's has notified him that they have further delayed the construction and opening of the store they had planned to open in the Seminary Square Shopping Center. Mayor Sal Garza says in a Friday afternoon press release that Kohl's told him recently -- though it's not clear when -- that they have reduced the number of annual store openings to 12 for 2013, making it not the right time to open a store in Galesburg. Garza says he's, quote, "disappointed" by the move, but the city will keep working with the company to get a store opened in Galesburg. Horne Properties sold the nearly five acres Kohl's wanted to build the store, and development director Michael Patterson said in the same city press release that he, too, is disappointed, but it doesn't appear to be a direct reflection of the Galesburg market, but could be more due to the current voliatility of the U.S. Economy. Kohl's said in March that they weren't ready to build in Galesburg over concerns about soft ground. But several retailers including a Toyota dealership have opened up there since then. Kohl's officials have e-mailed WGIL stating, quote, "At this time, we’ve not announced any plans to open a new store in your community. Kohl’s has an ongoing real estate assessment process. At any given time, Kohl’s is reviewing sites in communities nationwide. We do not comment on real estate speculation." |
