| County Board Gets Look at Zoning Ordinance |
Knox County officials have been working on an overhaul of the county's zoning ordinances, but there's been a problem -- no one has really seen them as of yet. The County Board held a special meeting last night to review for the first time a draft of the new ordinance, designed to replace one that's 45-years old and has had numerous amendments over the years. One resident said the document, while online, was hard to find, and other county board members said they hadn't seen much of it yet. One member said the county's zoning committee hasn't even reviewed it yet. Knox County Assistant State's Attorney Eric Gibson -- who's been working on the ordinance in what he claims is his spare time -- says it wasn't designed to be perfect last night.
"This isn't for board review we want to have a public meeting because there are so many board members here it has to be an open meeting. This was intended to be more of a workshop not for board review because the draft isn't ready for board review. What this is at this point is getting input so we can go back and review draft number two we have clarification."
The proposed changes include an administrative adjudication process -- something that Gibson says will help put some teeth into the zoning ordinance. More meetings are being held on the zoning ordinance before any vote is taken before the County Board. Board members last night approved 373-thousand dollars in bids for the first set of renovations to be done at the County Courthouse. |
