State Warns Against Car-Deer Crashes
Whether you're taking in the Knox County Scenic Drive this weekend, or just driving anywhere, state officials are again sounding the warning to be cautious when on the roads.

The Illinois Department of Transportation says that's because we're now entering the time of year when male white-tailed deer are most active.

IDNR Spokesman Chris McCloud says that makes fall the busiest season for car-deer collisions, as deer seek out sources for food, and even mates. "There's probably a better chance during this particular time that you'll see them out and about crossing roads, especially if you're driving near a wooded area or just a normal area where somebody might think they might see a deer," McCloud said. "That's where you need to be the most cautious and the most defensive when you're driving."

The Illinois Department of Transportation says there were just over 25,000 car-deer accidents in 2007, but that's down two-percent from the year prior. Of those, nearly 950 people were injured, and five more died.

A couple area counties are on the state's list for the top ten car-deer collisions in 2007. Peoria County is third with 694, and Fulton is tenth with 455. A majority of the others are in the Chicagoland area, while others are in other parts of the state.
