Health Department's Flu Vaccine is Here; Clinics Starting Soon
Knox County Health Department officials say their flu vaccine shipments have been received -- but they say it will still be a few weeks before you can get them.

The Health Department says the Centers for Disease Control increased its recommendations on who should receive the flu vaccine each fall. The CDC now states that all children aged 6 months to 18-years old, pregnant women, people who are 50 years of age and older, people with chronic medical conditions, people who live in nursing homes and health care workers are encouraged to get vaccinated.

Even though the shipments are already in Knox County, Community Health Improvement Director Michele Fishburn tells WGIL there's a good reason why flu shots aren't distributed any sooner than they are. "The Health Department begins offering the vaccine in late-October because the most common time for people to contract the flu in this area is Mid-February," Fishburn said. "In order to make sure that everybody has the immunity in their bodies at that time, we start giving the flu vaccine a little bit later in the year."

Health Department officials are also trying to dispell a rumor that you're getting the flu when you get the flu vaccine. They say that's just not true.
