Galesbug Fire Chief Promotes Safety; Says Plenty Not Seen So Far in 2008
2008 hasn't necessarily been a walk in the park so far for Galesburg Firefighters.

Last week was Fire Prevention Week in the state, and the month continues to be Fire Prevention Month as well, and Galesburg Fire Chief John Cratty says it's possible more needs to be done, since he says essentially the first half of the year has seen plenty of work for his crews.

Cratty tells WGIL there wasn't really one occurring theme with many of those fires. "We had some electrical-related fires, we had some accidental fires, we had some children with matches and lighter-type fires, we actually fires that were suspicious that were probably set by somebody," Cratty said. "So there wasn't any one single cause during that period."

Cratty says most of those causes, are things that can be prevented, which is the type of message the state had during Fire Prevention Week: prevent home fires by inspecting your home regularly, replacing damaged electrical cords, smoke outside, keep most home items at least three-feet away from heating equipment, and stay in the kitchen when cooking.

Cratty says there tends to be a higher risk for fires during the winter months, mainly because of the need to keep your home warm, and the use of things like space heaters to do it.
