District 205 Touts Improved Test Scores
Galesburg School District officials say overall, they're pleased with improvements in the district's test scores.

District-205 Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Joel Estes discussed some of the figures with the Galesburg School board Tuesday night. Full details, however, can't be released until the end of the month.

Overall, Estes said 79% of students met or exceeded state standards in either the Illinois Standards Achievement Test last year, and believes there wasn't much to complain about all the way around. "Looking at reading, math, and science...in ISAT, in third through eighth grade performance, we improved over (2007) in each of the areas," Estes said. "Most significant improvement was in the area of reading."

Estes says improvements like that are putting the district in "rarified air," and says all the credit should be given to the district's teachers.

Estes says the district's graduation rate, while still not satisfactory in his mind, went up to 80% last year from 77.9%.

The Galesburg School Board took action on no major items at Tuesday night's board meeting.

The Knoxville School Board, by the way, is expected to talk about test scores at its board meeting Wednesday night.
