District 205 Health Insurance Questioned
The health plan the Galesburg School District offers its employees just isn't cutting it.

That's according to at least one District-205 teacher, who took his concerns straight to the Galesburg School Board last night, even though the insurance plan -- and at least how much the district pays into it -- has been the point of discussion in meetings past this year.

Galesburg High School Band Director Ben Bredemeier told the board he didn't realize how much of a problem the health plan could be until health problems hit his family.

Bredemeier says those problems started with hours he says he and his wife spent getting expenses covered and questions answered. "We also discovered that after meeting our deductible, we would still have to pay $30 per office visit," Bredemeier said. "Any preventative shots or treatments that are necessary, co-pays, charges over reasonable and customary, and any other charges that are determined non-covered expenses" would also have to be paid out of pocket, Bredemeier said.

Bredemeier says he's also concerned with the cost of family health insurance, and "has a hard time believing that there is not better health insurance offered through other agencies," he said.

District officials say they hear Bredemeier, and are looking at hiring an outside consultant to do a comprehensive review of the health plan, as certain facets of the current one will expire over the next couple years.
