Prison Time for Man Accused of Attack on Off-Duty Police Officer
A man accused of causing a disturbance at the home of an off-duty Galesburg police officer and attacking several people on the property is off to prison.

Galesburg police arrested 26-year old David Harris of Knoxville in August on numerous felony charges for allegedly showing up at the officer's home screaming obscenities, striking the officer, threatening to kill him, and resisting and threatening authorities who responded to the scene. Judge James Stewart sentenced Harris to 6 years in prison Wednesday in Knox County Circuit Court after Harris pleaded guilty to felony charges of aggravated battery and threatening a public official.

The judge said Harris is eligible for the corrections department's boot camp program. Harris, who received credit for time served in jail since his arrest, will spend much less than 6 years in custody if he successfully completes the program and gets day-for-day credit for good behavior. Assistant State's Attorney Erik Gibson said Harris' criminal record includes a domestic battery charge in 2006, a criminal damage to property charge the following year, and a pending misdemeanor retail theft charge.

Harris tearfully told the court he was sorry for what he did. He said he had been drinking and didn't remember the incident at the officer's home. Harris also said he did not know the officer he's accused of attacking and threatening, and that the incident was random.
