18th District Candidates Spar Over Notary Issue
Even one's performance as a notary public is fair game when it comes to a congressional race. In the 18th District, which covers a portion of Knox County, Democrat Colleen Callahan says Republican Aaron Schock shows a lack of trustworthiness by, in 2001, notarizing a document with a current date that was more than a year old.

Schock's father had asked him to notarize the document, which surfaced at a white-collar federal trial this year in which the father was allegedly victimized into buying tax shelters which turned out to be fraudulent. The Schocks were not accused of wrongdoing, but Callahan now wants the Peoria County State's Attorney to investigate the candidate's actions.

Schock could be guilty of a misdemeanor, but he says it was simply a clerical error that happened even before he served in elective office. Pointing out his opponents cannot criticize his service in the General Assembly or on the Peoria school board, he says the allegation is "a desperate attempt by my opponent and the Democratic National Committee to try to smear me and make me look bad."

Callahan denies being responsible for the story.
