Whigs Make a Comeback
The original party of Abraham Lincoln is making a comeback, in the form of the Modern Whigs. The group now includes an Illinois chapter, headed by Jesse Corray of Bloomington . He says the Whigs' appeal is they are "not far to the left, not far to the right, more mainstream."

Corray, just back from the Marines, says the two major parties have lost their way. "The Democrats, the only thing they care about is their party, and the Republicans, the only thing they care about is their party lines," he says. "It doesn’t seem like they're actually representing those that they are supposed to be representing."

Corray says the Modern Whigs have no candidates yet, and the ones the party does field in 2010 will run as Republicans and Democrats until and unless the Whigs gain major-party status. Their platform includes energy independence, and their movement is now active in 20 states.
