State: Duck Hunters, Be Aware of Avian Flu
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources will again be on the lookout for any hunter-harvested ducks that carry the avian flu. The agency is announcing that this will be the third year that it takes samples at certain sites. Roy Domazlicky, the agency's urban waterfowl project manager, says it's still a precautionary measure.

"The bird flu form of great concern, which is the Asian H5N1, has not been found in the North American continent, but we would like to continue keep our eyes open for it just in case," he said. "Right now, it's not really too certain whether or not migratory birds could be the vector that brings it here, but we are still looking at them because we really can’t rule that possibility out."

Sampling collections will occur at select sites this Saturday and Sunday, as well as the weekends of Oct. 25-26 and Nov. 28-29. The U.S. Department of Agriculture provides funding for the sampling.

National Wildlife Health Center basic precautions:

* Do not handle or eat sick game.

* Wear rubber or disposable latex gloves while handling and cleaning game, wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, and thoroughly clean knives, equipment and surfaces that come in contact with game. After cleaning, surfaces and equipment can be disinfected with a 10 percent household bleach solution.

* Do not eat, drink, or smoke while handling animals.

* All game should be thoroughly cooked (well done or 160 degrees F).
