Corn Husking Competition in Roseville This Weekend
A flashback to the way corn husking used to be will be on display this weekend in a National Contest that is taking place in this area.

The 28th Annual Illinois State Corn Husking contest, and a national competition, will be held Saturday on the Harlan and Barb Jacobson Farm just south of Roseville. The first organized corn husking contest was in 1924, originated by Henry A. Wallace, who later became Secretary of Agriculture, as a way to demonstrate who was the best corn husker.

National Corn Husking Association President, and Little York resident Dick Humes tells WGIL the competition starts with state qualifying, then moves into the nationals. "You've got to qualify in your state before you can move on to the nationals," Humes said. "Most of your classes, you've got to place first or second, except in the open classes, and we have three people in the open classes. We'll have people in from nine states to pick."

Humes says the contest starts at 9am Saturday with the drawing for the first class at 8:30am. A paid membership of $15 is required to pick in the contest for the adult classes while its only a $3 for the youth classes.

There are nine classes that people can participate in, and if actual husking isn't your thing, Humes says there will be a craft fair and other activities on site.
