Sharp Drop in Gas Prices
You've no doubt noticed the drop in gas prices, and the most recent survey of prices for October by the Triple-A Chicago Motor Club confirms a significant decline since September.

Gas this month costs 51 cents less, on average, than it did a month ago. The statewide average is still $3.30, according to Triple-A. Prices are much cheaper downstate compared to the Chicago area, where gas is still selling for more than $3.50 a gallon in many places.

Nicole Niemi, spokesperson for the Triple-A Chicago Motor Club, says drivers are saving money because high gas prices have conditioned them to conserve.

"People have decreased their demand relatively significantly because of the high (gas) prices that we’ve had for the whole year. So it's somewhat become a new way of driving, combining the errands doing things like that that now has just become routine."

The drop in gas prices is primarily attributed to the price of crude oil, which has fallen from $160 to less than $70 a barrel last week.

Niemi says prices may have fallen sooner had the supply not been affected by the hurricanes in the Gulf Coast.

Locally, the lowest price for a gallon of gas costs about $2.70. The statewide average is 49 cents higher this month compared to last month at the same time.
