Police Warn of Possible Phone Scam
Galesburg Police officials are warning of a scam that might end up adding a few unwanted calls to your telephone bill.

Police reports indicate a woman who runs a business out of her home got a number of calls last week that claimed to be from a representative of the Cook County Sheriffs Department, saying a loved one of hers had passed away. That caller, however, also said she needed to call another number to get more information. The woman told police she eventually called Cook County, who claimed the call wasn't coming from them.

Police say it turns out, the calls were possibly a sort-of back-door way to allow inmates to use that phone line to make long-distance phone calls. Officers say you should call their department if you're the victim of such a scam.

The scam is one of a number of similar-type scams being reported in recent weeks throughout the country.

A similar scam was reported late last week involving inmates at a Texas jail.
