Idea Proposed for Use of Former Monmouth Guard Armory
A group has come up with its recommendation for how the old National Guard Armory in Monmouth can be used as not only a hub for a number of community activities, but also put a number of social service agencies essentially under one room.

The presentation was made to the Monmouth City Council Monday night, by Starting Point Ministries Executive Director Jack Toal, who says there has been plenty of interest expressed in use of the building since a committee was formed to look into possible uses of the armory -- closed down last year along with one in Galesburg after guard units were moved to a new Readiness Center in Galesburg.

Toal says there are four key areas he feels should be represented in using the armory. "Community services being one of the areas that we focused on, advocacy referral and resource as a second area that we focused on, education as a third area, and then counseling and support as a fourth area," Toal said, "that we have really focused in on as the areas that the agencies that have come together already provide within this community, and what we can do together as an entity."

Toal says funding has already been secured that would cover what he called the low-end of estimates the city has provided for holding costs -- basically, utilities -- in order to keep the armory in working order.

The City Council is being asked to think about the proposal and vote on it at their meeting in November.
