Defendant in Attempted Murder Re-Trial Tests Self-Defense Defense
A Galesburg man who's representing himself in his re-trial on attempted murder and other felony charges likely didn't get what he wanted in what was his first attempt to try and prove that the alleged assault of a then-Galesburg woman over four-years ago was self-defense.

41-year old Jerry Mabry is facing charges of Attempted First-Degree Murder, Aggravated Criminal Sexual Assault, Unlawful Restraint, and Aggravated Battery, and Tuesday was the first day of testimony following opening statements.

On cross-examination, Mabry – representing himself – asked Galesburg Police officer Bryan Anderson if he thought it was possible that the injuries sustained by the now-former Galesburg woman in mid-June of 2004 inside her Mulberry Street home could be the result of self-defense. Anderson said in his experience as an officer, that couldn't be possible. He said the injuries shown through photographic evidence to jurors were far beyond what would be considered self-defense, calling them "almost sadistic."

Anderson was one of three Galesburg Police officers to testify about their roles in the case Tuesday. The victim's 15-year old daughter also testified, describing the bloodbath she encountered when she entered the home after spending the night with a family friend.

Testimony will continue at 9am Wednesday at the Knox County Courthouse.
