No Pay Raises for Galesburg's Elected Officials
It wasn't unanimous, but there isn't a single Galesburg elected position voters will cast ballots for in April that will see a pay raise.

The Galesburg City Council Tuesday night voted down pay raises for the mayor, city clerk, city treasurer, and the aldermanic positions up for re-election in 2009. The same went for the township assessor, township trustees, and the township clerk.

Of those officials, township assessor Darrell Lovell was either the most vocal, or the most furious - because, he says, at a township meeting a few weeks ago, he didn't realize he wouldn't be getting a raise.

"I was asked at the budget meeting what I was asking, and I gave the explanations why I was asking what I did and there was no questions then, and I'm really dumfounded on why the city council made the vote they made. I'd like to think I'm on the same level as the city employees and the city manager."

Lovell says if the city can give raises to people like the City Manager, it can give some money to him. Several aldermen said it was nothing personal despite Lovell's allegation, but that the economy and other factors led the raises to be rejected.

Only Aldermen Mike Lummis and Lomac Payton voted in favor of most of the raises.
