Galesburg FY09 Budget "Lean": City Manager; Download Budget Document Here
Galesburg city leaders have unveiled a budget for the coming fiscal and calendars that, they say, isn't much bigger than the current year budget.

The budget was the topic of discussion prior to Tuesday night's city council meeting during a work session. City Manager Dane Bragg says the nearly $66 million budget is only $2 million higher than this year -- or, about three-and-a-half percent.

Bragg says the budget, which he terms as "lean" due to the uncertain economic climate, is one he also calls skewed, "primarily, because of the water treatment plant project," Bragg told aldermen. "You'll recall that we had an additional $10 million budgeted in 2008, and we also have an additional $10 million budgeted in 2009 to complete the water system improvements that we had planned. In 2009, that area will include nearly completing the water treatment plant at Oquawka."

Bragg says other points in the budget include over $2 million more for sidewalk and road reconstruction, millions for the proposed Seminary Street overpass, and further work toward establishing rail crossing quiet zones.

Another budget work session will be held at the next council meeting, and final action will take place after that.

Copies of the budget are available to read at City Hall and the Galesburg Public Library. You can also download a PDF of the budget by CLICKING HERE.
