Unemployment Lower Than Last Month, Still Higher Than Last Year
The number of jobless in the area continues to be high, even though some parts of the region have more jobs than this time last year.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security says the City of Galesburg's Unemployment Rate is at 7.5% -- almost two percentage points higher than this time last year, but lower than the 8.2% rate Galesburg had a month ago.

The unemployment rate for all of Knox County is much lower than that -- 6.8% in September, compared to 7.4% than the month prior.

In Warren County, September's unemployment rate is down less than a half-point, 6.1% in September, compared to 6.5% in August.

The state says the Galesburg-Area, which combines Knox and Warren Counties, total non-payroll farm jobs have fallen over the year-to-year period. They say there were job gains in the sectors of Government, Educational-Health Services, and Construction, but those could not offset losses in Leisure-Hospitality, Transportation-Warehousing-Utilities, and some other sectors.

Unemployment rates in other area counties are down from month. Stark County has the lowest jobless number in the area, but also the lowest number of jobs. Comparatively, Henry County has the lowest area unemployment rate at 6%.
