State Gives Money to Illinois Food Banks
The demand for help from Illinois' food banks is growing, so the state is kicking in some money.

The Illinois Department of Human Services has allocated $500,000 to give to the Illinois Food Bank Association. This will help food pantries around Illinois purchase 1 million pounds of food, including 100,000 pounds of fresh produce, which is often lacking from the diets of low-income families, even if they receive food stamps, either because it's too expensive or just not available in some areas.

Illinois food pantries have experienced a 30 percent increase in people needing food from August last year to August this year, as residents have been squeezed by a slowing economy, and higher prices for food, gasoline and other necessities. The food pantries expect to help 900,000 people with food this year.
