Deliberations Underway in Attempted Murder Case
The re-trial of a Galesburg man accused of sexually assaulting and attempting to kill a now-former Galesburg woman over four years ago inside her home is now in the hands of the jury.

The nine-woman, three-man jury got the case of 41-year old Jerry Mabry around 10:30 this morning. Mabry faces charges of Attempted First-Degree Murder, Aggravated Criminal Sexual Assault, Unlawful Restraint, and Aggravated Battery. Mabry is accused of committing the repeated assault on the woman inside her Mulberry Street home in June of 2004.

During closing arguments this morning, Knox County State's Attorney John Pepmeyer referred to the incident as "Nightmare on Mulberry Street," saying Maybry gained access to the residence and committed the beatings, and pointed out how Mabry essentially admitted to the assault, and that he had killing on his mind.

Mabry, representing himself, claims the victim has never told the real story, and that only he and the victim are the ones that really know what happened. He says the injuries the victim received weren't life-threatening, and that he used necessary force to defend himself from an attack he claims she started.

When a verdict is reached in the trial, we'll let you know on WGIL and WGIL.com.
