City Clerk Announces End of Run; Deputy Clerk Announces Candidacy to Succeed Her
A Galesburg elected official in office longer than most of her peers in the city will leave the post following the April election.

City Clerk Anita Carlton issued a statement Tuesday saying she would not seek another term at her post -- a post she's held for 25 years. In that statement, Carlton says her office has, "flourished over the past 25 years" -- adding responsibilities for the city such as dealing with the city's three pension funds, animal rental, contractor, and alarm system registration.

Carlton became a Registered Municipal Clerk in 1986, and helped form the Central Illinois Municipal Clerks Organization two years later.

Carlton says the city has been a great place to work, and says she wishes the city council, city employees, and the public well.

Prior to her formal announcement Tuesday, Deputy City Clerk Kelli Bennewitz became the first candidate to formally announce a run for the top job. Bennewitz has been Deputy Clerk since 2003, and says in her own statement she's ready for the new challenge if elected.

So far, no one is running against Bennewitz.
