Monmouth City Administrator Says Tax Referendum for County, Not City
Monmouth's city administrator says he can understand where voters could be confused about a tax referendum on the ballot in Warren County on Tuesday, but he says he wants to make one thing clear: it's not Monmouth's tax.

Eric Hanson says he hears from many residents who think the ballot question asking voters whether or not they support the implementation of an additional sales tax that would pay for the whole county's public safety needs, think it's just a tax that will be benefit Monmouth.

Hanson tells W-G-I-L nothing could be further from the truth.

"The reality is that it has nothing to do with the city. It's not going to put up our buildings, it has nothing to with the police building or the fire (department) building. It has everything to with them trying to fill a budget hole. Unfortunately because our projects are going up simultaneously, there appears to be some misunderstanding about who's getting that tax money."

Hanson says, in fact, the money is already in place that's paying for the new police and fire stations already under construction.

The one-cent sales tax, according to Warren County Sheriff Martin Edwards, is expected to bring in over a half-million dollars that will help fill budget needs for his department, but has nothing to do with Monmouth's operations.
