PHOTOS: Haz-Mat Drill in Galesburg
A drill and training session in Galesburg Saturday tested the ability of local fire departments to respond to a hazardous materials situation and explosion.

Division #31 of the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) hosted a drill Saturday designed to test dispatch, response, technical rescue, hazardous material response, as well as emergency medical system capabilities at the Galesburg Fire Department Regional Training Center.

The scenario included a mock explosion that simulates damage to the training facility and adjacent buildings. Several "victims" were trapped and had to be rescued by the emergency responders. The rescuers also had to handle a hazardous material environment.

Firefighters and emergency responders from 20 area fire departments in Knox, Warren, Henry, and Mercer counties are expected to participate. Other exercise participants include the Galesburg Police Department, Knox County Sheriffs Department, Knox County E-911 Dispatch Center, Knox County Health Department, OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Cottage Hospital, Galesburg Hospitals Ambulance Service, and American Red Cross.
