Traffic Task Force Formed for Warren, Mercer, Henderson Counties
An Illinois Department of Transportation grant means drivers in Western Illinois will have to obey the rules of the road a little closer.

A yearlong IDOT grant created a task force combining the efforts of the Monmouth Police Department and the Sherrif's Departments of Warren, Henderson, and Mercer counties. The task force was created to concentrate and enforce the rules for high risk driving habits in the area and reduce the overall traffic crashes in the area thus saving property and lives.

The program's director, Sgt. Joseph Bratcher with the Monmouth Police Department, tells WGIL what violations the task force is specifically looking to enforce. "The number one cause of traffic accidents is speeding," Bratcher said. "So our primary goal, our primary focus, will be the habitual speeder that goes through our area of concern."

The city of Monmouth has participated in this program for the last two years. The city has witnessed a drop of overall accidents by 40 percent and a decline in personal injury accidents by 50 percent.
