Garza Formalizes Galesburg Mayoral Bid
There are now officially two people running for Galesburg's top elected position in next April's election.

While he confirmed his intentions in August, Sal Garza made the formal announcement of his candidacy Saturday morning.

Garza worked as a senior engineer at the Galesburg Maytag plant until its closure and is currently an employee with the State Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

Garza says he's running for mayor because he wants to give back to a community that has been good to him and his family. "My family came to the United States to seek opportunity and a better quality of life. We found it here in Galesburg," Garza said. "All the possibilities, and all the opportunities to be an American, we found right here in Galesburg, Illinois."

Garza did not discuss anything specific he would do if elected, except to say he wanted to help move the city forward.

Garza is running against local computer company owner Nathan Rockhold in April. Incumbent Mayor Gary Smith has not publicly indicated whether or not he'll run again.
