Illinois Economic Growth at a Snail's Pace
The economy in Illinois is growing, but it's at a slower rate than last month.

The University of Illinois each month publishes the Flash Index, a snapshot of the state's economy that determines whether or not it's growing.

Last month's index was 102.3, and the latest report is down to 101.1. The key number is 100; anything over that reflects growth.

U of I Economist Fred Giertz says the state's economy will be dragged down by the troubles in the financial sector.

"The economy is still holding up relatively well, and it's held up surprisingly well over the last year given all the problems in the financial sector. But at some point the spillover is gonna start to be serious and that could be very close now."

However, Giertz says there's no need to panic over the Flash Index alone.

The 101.1 index score for October is the lowest for the state in four years.
