Auditor Makes Recommendations for Knoxville; Water Rates Priority Number One
The City of Knoxville may have to raise residents' water rates. That was one of the recommendations given to the Knoxville City Council by an auditor in the Council meeting Monday night.

It was revealed that the city pays almost $200,000 a year in maintenance and upkeep for the $8 million water system in place. It was urged by Knoxville auditor Greg Kneer that the council begin to raise water rates a little every year to facilitate upkeep on the water system.

"As you've seen with your revenue not going up as much as your expenditures, and probably what we're all experiencing, we're suggesting you monitor that water/sewer (line item) closely," Kneer said. "And if you need to raise rates, that would be one way to do that, to try to monitor on a monthly or a quarterly basis."

Other recommendations made by the auditor include monitoring expenditures every month. Kneer specifically said that the finance committee should appoint someone specific to approve the write offs every month. The city currently has no official procedure do do that specific task and even then, officials said procedure isn't always followed.

Another suggestion by the auditor was to have the committee have control over the city's Certificates of Deposit and investments.
