Downtown Redevelopment Suggestions Made; Download the Full Audio Here
Nothing is set in stone, but a consulting firm has come up with a number of ways the city of Galesburg can improve or overhaul the look of its downtown.

Kent Massie of the Springfield-based firm Massie and Massie brought their study to aldermen Monday night, and made a number of suggestions that could improve the downtown's look, from more green space, to expanding the public square, to even more walkways.

All in all, Massie told aldermen there were several areas of importance that could be focused on. "You need, probably, two things to go on simultaneously," Massie said. "One is to improve what you have -- whether it's facades, whether it's looking at parking assessments, and the whole parking thing. Try to build on exactly the fabric that you have and try to get it boosted up. I think you also need a major civic thrust with a particular project."

Massie said such a project could be the National Railroad Hall of Fame's construction, or possibly something like the three railroad overpasses being planned for.

No costs were discussed, and there are no official plans in place to implement any of the recommendations Massie's firm made.
