Pay Raises for Galesburg Aldermen? Maybe Not
It's entirely possible neither aldermen, nor the mayor, and possibly not the city clerk, will get pay raises in a couple of weeks.

The Galesburg City Council Monday night discussed a $1,000 annual raise in the pay for aldermen, a $500 annual raise for the salary of the mayor beginning in 2010, and raises for the city clerk as well.

No final vote was taken on the raises; that will come in two weeks. But First Ward Alderman Ken Goad already knows he'll be voting no. "It would be nice to give everyone an increase in wages," Goad said. "People deserve an increase in wages. But, given the economic times we're in, I cannot support an increase in wages for anyone. It's sending a wrong signal to people who have no jobs, people who are working minimum wage, people who have no insurance. We're raising the water rates. We're going to get a large increase in our heat and lights at home."

Third Ward Alderman Russell Fleming, among others, also said he would vote no, citing the fact that the country appears to be going into "a depression."

One alderman said he'd support raises for the city clerk and treasurer, but not for aldermen or the mayor.
