Bates Appointed As New Monmouth Alderman
A Monmouth man who served on the city's Zoning Board of Appeals has been appointed to the city council.

Aldermen Monday night unanimously accepted Mayor Rod Davies' choice of Dave Bates to replace former Ward 2 alderman Dave Giles, who stepped down last month after serving on the city council since 2001. Giles said he was moving out of his ward, prompting the resignation.

Bates, tells WGIL he wants to contribute to the city, and serving as an alderman is one way to do that.

"Just an opportunity to participate in functions of the city and maybe share some of my knowledge and experience."

Bates, a former manager of the Farmland Plant in Monmouth, says he served on the Monmouth Zoning Board of Appeals for about two years. The city council unanimously approved the appointment of Jack McBride to replace Bates on the board.

In other business, aldermen approved the renewal of the city's residential recycling program with Maple City Recycling, and the city council approved a proposal from Munson's Pool and Spa of Galesburg to paint, make repairs and winterize the city pool at a cost of around 16-thousand dollars.
