Idle Landfill Could Be Money Maker for Monmouth
A landfill in Monmouth that's been closed since the early 1990s could become a source of revenue for the city.

City Administrator Eric Hanson told the city council last Monday night that a company has submitted a proposal to convert the methane gas that's building up and discharging from the landfill hole into energy. Hanson estimates there's between 20,000 to 25,000 carbon credits in the landfill. He says a carbon credit on the market is the equivalent of one metric ton of carbon.

Hanson tells WGIL the city is taking a serious look at the proposal.

"We think it's at least a viable option to consider. If we can make a cash flow and not burden ourselves with too much regulation, it looks like a real good opportunity for the city to generate some money."

The city currently pays for the monitoring of the landfill.

Hanson says the proposal involves no capital outlay for the city, meaning it won't cost a dime. Hanson says the company that's interested, which he didn't name, has an office in Illinois. The Illinois EPA helped put the city in contact with the company, which the city would pay a percentage of the revenue generated from it harvesting the gas produced by the landfill.

Hanson told the city council he expects to have more information about the proposal in the next 30 to 45 days.
