Knox County Health Department Again Concerned About Fees
If you own a food establishment in Knox County and need to get an inspection - beware, your fees may be increasing for the service. The Knox County Board of Health talked about possibly raising their fee for inspection services in order to raise more money because of constantly lower state funding given to the board of health.

In a comparison given out at the Knox County Board of Health's meeting Thursday night, the fees for inspection services are relatively small compared other surrounding counties. Category 1 establishments, meaning high risk ventures, need to be inspected by the Health Department three times a year and Knox County only charges $135 which is the cheapest charge compared to any of eight counties around the area. Rock Island and Peoria charge up to $300 and $400 for the same service. Knox County also does not charge for re-instating a suspended permit, a complete plan review, or a remodeling plan review which six of the eight surrounding counties charge at least $100.

The board was concerned that people who use that free service of the county for the plans, may not call on the board's advice if charged which in turn would lead to higher or more likely suspected food born illnesses such as salmonella or botulism. The Knox County Board of Health reports the so far this year, no botulism cases and only 8 confirmed cases of salmonella were reported. The item of fee increases will be discussed more at next month's meeting.
