Water Rate Increases Pass Galesburg City Council
Two Galesburg aldermen weren't too thrilled with one part of the City of Galesburg's proposal to increase water rates for its local customers, but in the end, only one of those two voted against the proposal.

The Galesburg City Council Monday night voted seven to one to approve what amounts to a 15% increase in water usage fees for city residents, and a several dollar increase in the imposed facilities fees.

Fifth Ward Alderman Karen Lafferty says she wasn't too thrilled with the facilities fee increase, and would like for the increases to stop.

"I would like to see us not to continually to increase the facility charge. I'd like to see us increase more our water usage charge than the facility charge if the council could look at that in the next few years."

Lafferty voted yes on the increase. But Third Ward Alderman Russell Fleming voted no for much the same reason.

"The facility fee, I think is punitive for people on fixed incomes and I think we should maintain that facility fee," Fleming said. "Conservation, somebody that can conserve water to lower their bill is not there when you increase the facility fee each time."

Five percent increases will likely be imposed on the communities like Abingdon and Knoxville who buy their water supplies from Galesburg.
