Abingdon Awarded Grant for Emergency Street Repairs
The Abingdon City Council got some unexpected, but welcome news that should ultimately make driving in town a little less bumpy.

The city recently spent about $100,000 over the summer to reconstruct a long-time problem stretch of Meek Street from Route 41 to the post office. There's work elsewhere in town that still needs to be done, but some of the money to pay for it won't be coming out of the city's coffers.

City engineer Kevan Cooper told the city council at Monday night's meeting that a local lawmaker is behind the good news. "We were contacted by IDOT, and thanks to the efforts of Representative Don Moffitt, the city of Abingdon has been awarded a grant for up to $25,000 for emergency street repairs," Cooper said.

The grant money can be used for materials and labor, and Cooper says it has to be spent by June. The Streets Committee plans to meet soon to determine where repairs are needed the most.
