New Illinois GOP Chief Wants Republicans to Get Along
The new chairman of the Illinois Republican Party wants to avoid acrimony leading up to next year's primary.

Republican primaries for governor and U.S. Senate in recent years have been mud-slinging affairs, with the winner coming out battered and the party divided at the start of the general election race.

State Republican Chairman Pat Brady says that won't happen this time. "We're not gonna be the party where we let everybody get chewed up, like has happened in the past," he said. "Part of being a strong party chairman is invoking some discipline for the better good of the party."

Brady says the candidates for statewide office have been restrained so far, but he says if it gets nasty in January, he'll step in and enforce discipline. He wouldn't say how, though he implied he has some mechanisms.

There are at least six Republican candidates for governor: State Sen. Bill Brady (R-Bloomington), who is not related to the party chairman, State Sen. Kirk Dillard (R-Hinsdale), DuPage County Board Chairman Robert Schillerstrom, former state Republican Chairman Andrew McKenna, businessman Adam Andrzejewski, and political pundit Dan Proft.

The U.S. Senate Race has at least four Republican candidates: U.S. Rep. Mark S. Kirk (R-Highland Park), former Judge Don Lowery, lawyer Patrick Hughes, minister and businessman Eric Wallace, and John Arrington, a former alderman in Harvey .

The primary is Feb. 2, 2010.
