Study: Unemployment Equals Mental Illness
Tough economic times can lead to pay cuts, even layoffs. Now, survey results show that dealing with those actions can lead to mental illness.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness says its survey indicates that people who have to swallow pay cuts or reduced hours at work are twice as likely to have symptoms of mental illness, and that people who lose their jobs entirely are four times as likely to have symptoms.

The Illinois branch of NAMI hopes everyone realizes how much a job is tied to their sense of self-worth, and recognizes when it's time to call a doctor. Organization executive director Lora Thomas says major depression affects 5 to 8 percent of adult population, but many people don't reach out for help. Thomas points out that depression is treatable, and says that treatment such as antidepressants and talk therapy is effective in four out of five cases.
