Feds Provide Money for Crime Prevention Programs; Quinn Wants More
In these hard economic times, often the first cuts made in state government are those programs that help youth stay off the streets and in school. Gov. Pat Quinn says the federal government must help out in that department.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced Wednesday that he is trying to secure $24 million to help fund community-based crime prevention programs, but Quinn says more can be done.

"One of the biggest things the governors of our country need...is the ability to borrow from the federal government when we have these hard times," Quinn said at a rally for Teen Reach and other after school programs. "We can't cut back on Teen Reach and programs like this. It really will harm American and harm Illinois and harm young boys and girls coming up."

Quinn says it is essential to keep after-school and youth-oriented programs up and running so kids have a place to go rather than ending up on the streets.

The recorded beating death of a Chicago high school student has captured the attention of the nation on the subject of youth violence.
