Public Forum Monday on Proposed Knox County Building Codes; One Member Wants Codes Revisited
Area residents will have a chance to make their voices heard in an upcoming public forum to discuss building codes within the county.

The Knox County Board will hold a forum Monday night at six o'clock at the Knox County Courthouse to hear concerns about a set of proposed building codes which the county board voted in favor of during their last meeting.

Knox County Clerk Scott Erickson tells WGIL the forum is being held to, in part, explain the codes to the public, and hear what they have to say about them.

"It looks to be...not to be intrusive, to be looking and changing just light bulbs," Erickson said. "There was a lot of concern, questions, brought up about that (at the last county board meeting). That's what (the county board is) looking at doing -- addressing that at the meeting, getting everything out so that everyone knows exactly what the intent of the passage of that resolution was."

The new codes will require $50 permits to be purchased for plumbing and electrical work.

District 1 County Board member Allen Pickrel, who could not be reached for comment, sent out an e-mail last weekend asking that the codes be revisited, and saying that another position will be created and paid for by the taxpayers of the county as a result of them.

Pickrel accuses the county of, in his words, micromanaging the way people wish to live their lives and care for their homes.

He says he cannot believe this is needed since the county has done without the position for a long time.
