IL Supreme Court Says Guns Can be Stored in Glove Boxes
If you are taking your guns with you in a car, the guns have to be in an enclosed case. The Illinois Supreme Court says it doesn't have to be a case especially designed to store guns -- it could just be the glove compartment or center console.

That's what the state's highest court said about a Peoria case in which an appeals court disagreed with the trial court. Defendant Michael Diggins was not allowed at trial to have a jury instruction that the gun was fine where it was -- the center console of his SUV.

Peoria County State's Attorney Kevin Lyons says he has not decided whether to retry the case, adding the high court's decision won’t make society any safer.

Tiffany Ritchie, a lawyer who handled the appellate and Supreme Court portions of the case on behalf of Diggins, says the most important part of her victory is that it tells a local judge he or she can rely only on the words of the law, not try to read the lawmakers' minds.

Diggins was paroled after serving a year of a 30-month sentence.
